Elbridge Gerry (who it was named after) was part of the #FEDERALISTS (Jefferson, Madison, et al) that from start kept arguing for MORE FEDERAL POWER AND AUTHORITY that Anti-Federalists opposed; and each of them that got elected eroded the #USConstitution each time.
