First, the backlash is obviously deserved.
HOWEVER, I understand the "Character Letters" thing and THEY BLEW IT
Both in the Letters they wrote, AND the aftermath.
IT WOULD HAVE BEEN OK TO SAY...
"I knew ...so-and-so... but sometimes GOOD PEOPLE can GO BAD and DO BAD THINGS, but it is my sincere belief that if held accountable for HIS BAD (with some leniency) WOULD RETURN TO THE GOOD PERSON we know him as before."
That would certainly be a Character reference I could write for someone I knew/know that somehow goes astray, must be held accountable, but hopefully return to Society and again be a productive member of Society.
But NOT OK for their non-apology apology manure trying to deflect
